Equivalent finish times
Pace and speed are the same thing, two ways
Pace is time per distance (minutes per km or mile); speed is distance per time (km/h or mph). They are reciprocals, so once you fix one, the other three are determined. Tell the calculator what you know and it shows all four at once, plus what that pace works out to over every common race distance.
Why km and miles do not line up
A mile is 1.609 km, so a per-mile pace is always a larger number than the same effort per km — there is simply more ground in a mile. 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mi, not 5:00 /mi. The converter handles the 1.609 factor so you never have to.
Reading the race times
The finish-time table assumes you hold the entered pace evenly for the whole distance. It is a planning tool, not a prediction: real races slow over distance, so use the race time predictor when you want a realistic goal for a longer event from a shorter one.
Questions
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply your per-km pace by 1.609. The converter does it for you — enter a pace or speed in any one unit and it shows all four at once, so 5:00 /km appears as 8:03 /mi, 12.0 km/h, and 7.5 mph.
What are the finish times?
They show what your entered pace works out to over 1 km, 1 mile, 5K, 10K, 10 miles, the half, and the marathon, assuming you hold it evenly. It is a planning aid, not a prediction.
Why is per-mile a bigger number than per-km?
A mile is longer than a kilometre, so it takes more time to cover — the per-mile pace is always about 1.609× the per-km figure for the same effort.
