Turning steps into distance

The link between steps and distance is your stride length — how far you travel with each step. Multiply steps by stride length to get distance, or divide distance by stride length to get steps. Everything here comes from that one relationship.

Estimating stride from height

If you do not measure your own stride, height is a good proxy: walking stride is about 0.414 × height and running stride about 0.45 × height. A running gait is longer and has a flight phase, so you cover more ground per step — which is why running takes fewer steps per mile than walking.

Make it your own

Rules of thumb land near 2,000 walking steps and roughly 1,500 running steps per mile, but they vary with leg length and speed. Enter a measured stride (walk a known 10 steps, divide the distance by 10) in the override field for a result tuned to you.

Questions

How many steps are in a mile?

It depends on height and speed, but a common rule of thumb is about 2,000 walking steps per mile and around 1,500 running steps per mile, because running stride is longer. This tool estimates your own from your height.

How is my stride length estimated?

From your height: roughly 0.41 × height for walking and about 0.45 × height for running. Entering your real stride (from a measured 10-step walk) makes it more accurate.

Why do running and walking differ?

A running gait has a longer stride and a flight phase, so you cover more ground per step than walking — meaning fewer steps for the same distance when you run.
